A FAMILY HERITAGE - Over 50 Years of Christian Ministry

    Our Purpose

Gullion’s is a family-owned-and-operated Christian Supply ministry to the Piedmont region of North Carolina and surrounding areas. From our two store locations in King and Statesville, NC, we strive to support the area’s Christian community through the provision of a wide variety of God-honoring and Bible-based materials that encourage spiritual growth and enable the Lord’s work.

    Our Distinctives

Over the years, Gullion’s has become known for its welcoming, grace-filled atmosphere, as we do our best, by God’s grace, to continue in the “old paths.” The unique nature of our ministry has served to create a special relationship with our loyal customers, with hopes that they consider themselves welcome guests, and friends and partners in our ministry.

With frequent prayer for discernment, we offer a unique selection of products that noticeably distinguish us from other Christian bookstores you may have visited, including…

    • A comprehensive selection of King James Bibles, and that exclusively. Click HERE for information regarding our Bible translation standard.

    • An extensive New and Used Book inventory with a decided emphasis on the tried and true authors of the past, along with those of today that seek to hold the line of Biblical authority and sound doctrine. Our standard for books using scripture on most every page (mainly reference books and devotionals) is that they should be KJV-based. *Our used book inventory primarily comes from buying/trading them with our customers. See our trade-in program details HERE.

    • A wide selection of inspiring Gifts and Greeting Cards (boxed and single), all featuring the King James Bible when scripture is quoted.

    • A full line of Church Supplies and SS/VBS curriculum, also exclusively KJV-based.

    • A Music CD and Accompaniment Track selection that emphasizes the more traditional styles, along with a selection of movie DVDs that primarily features older, classic titles.

    • An attractive selection of Old-fashioned Games and Toys in an effort to encourage family togetherness in today’s distracted, divided culture.

    • An array of Health Supplements, Foods, and Books, in an effort to encourage sometimes neglected “temple maintenance."

    • A New and Used Homeschool Materials department that has to be seen to be believed.

We estimate that only 10-20% of our product inventory matches up with that of today’s average Christian bookstore, thus providing a unique experience for you, our honored guests and ministry partners.

In appreciation of our efforts at providing a trustworthy product selection, many pastors and churches actively encourage their members to support our ministry, and van loads of like-minded Christians are a frequent sight in our stores. Feel free to contact us ahead of time if you are considering such an outing, and we’ll be pleased to provide refreshments for you while you shop and fellowship.

    Our History

In the early 1960’s, David Gullion, a young missionary and recent Bible college graduate, eagerly arrived in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. There he met and married Loretta Johnson, a one-room school teacher and oldest daughter in a family of thirteen. He soon accepted a position as a teacher and coach at a local Christian college, where the young couple served together as dorm parents. Before long, though, David’s enterprising nature was also evidenced, and Hazard Christian Supply, the region’s first business of its kind, was off and running. Later renaming it Dwight’s Bible Shop (after their firstborn son), and adding a second location in the 1970’s, they provided for the Christians and churches of Appalachia until the business was sold and the family relocated to the Winston-Salem, NC area in the 1980’s.

When Dwight finished college and moved to the area as well, in April of 1992, he and his father opened the Tarheel rendition of the family business as Gullion’s Christian Supply Center. Originally located in the Cook’s Plaza II Market (at the current site of Forsyth Tech’s Transportation Technology Center on North Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem), by the next year a full-time storefront was opened up on Reynolda Road, in a portion of what had been the Beacon Hill Motel. By 1994, expansion to larger quarters just up the street in the Oldtown Shopping Center was accomplished.

Excited responses in the surrounding communities to Gullion’s conservative product lines and friendly service prompted ventures in Walkertown (1995) and Statesville (1998), with Loretta, Missy (Dwight’s wife), Dwain and Brian (Dwight’s brothers), and even a few cousins joining in the efforts as they grew.

When an opportunity arose to purchase their own 6000 sq/ft building, the family moved the Oldtown store to King in 2001, and grew to a peak of four retail locations when Mt. Airy beckoned in 2002.

The next decade was challenging, however, as online shopping began to grow and traditional Christian bookstore sales declined in brick-and-mortar shops across the nation. Over a dozen Christian bookstores in the Piedmont closed, with the “Great Recession” of 2008 being the final straw for several of them.

In 2009, these pressures were instrumental in the difficult decision to consolidate the King and Walkertown locations to a large storefront on University Parkway in Winston-Salem.

Upon David’s unexpected passing in 2012, even more changes were needed, so in 2014, the Winston store was moved back to the previous location in King, and the Mt. Airy branch merged with it there after 12 years of ministry in Mayberry.

Homeschool market growth, a carefully-chosen, moderately-priced product mix, and incomparably friendly service have allowed Gullion’s in King and Statesville to remain open and serving to this day.

Dwight, Missy, and their family invite the community to join with them as a third generation looks forward to many more years of business and ministry in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.
